Often in science fiction movies, the heroes have lasers to help them in their fight against the villains (who may have weapons, too). In dentistry, we use lasers to fight one of the most common oral health problems — gum disease.
So, maybe our lasers aren’t as exciting as the kinds you see in movies and on television shows. Our lasers are real, however, and they do a great job of fighting off infections.
This may go without saying, but we would prefer to help you prevent periodontal problems whenever possible. At the same time, we do want you to know that we offer an advanced approach to gum disease treatment should you ever need it.
You deserve to have healthy gums and a healthy smile. So, you also should visit the office of Brian Davey, DDS, in San Diego, CA soon. Just call 858-762-9991 to make your appointment.
How Lasers Help
Dental lasers are making soft tissue treatments simpler and helping people recover faster as well.
At one time, gum surgery was the way dentists treated advanced gum disease. Without getting into the specifics, this meant cutting away the infected tissue (and some healthy tissue) and using stitches to close the tissue that is left.
With dental lasers, we can gently remove infected gum tissue. The laser also preserves and seals more of the healthy tissue. This also reduces bleeding, and stitches are not needed in most cases.
With our laser procedure, you can recover more quickly, and we can more accurately target the infected tissue.
Other Gum Treatment Options
While laser dentistry is incredibly effective, it’s even better to identify periodontal problems before you have advanced gum disease.
In those situations, treatments like scaling and root planing along with Perio Protect may be all you need. Perio Protect is a noninvasive option that may seem surprisingly simple. You get custom-fitted trays. You fill the trays with medication and wear them over your teeth for 10 to 15 minutes per day during your treatment.
This option is particularly effective at restoring gums in the early and moderate stages of gum infections.
Protect Your Oral Health
The best approach to good oral health is preventive care. That’s why we push complete health dentistry at our office.
We would much rather help you avoid dental problems than treat them. This is a team effort. Your daily brushing and flossing will go a long way toward removing harmful bacteria and plaque buildup. At that same time, regular professional cleanings will remove tartar. Routine exams are when we find problems in the early stages, when treatments are simpler, more effective, and less invasive.
