Veneers: What, Why and How

Veneers: They’re Everywhere

The average American sees a smile made of veneers almost daily. Did you know that you’ve likely seen someone with a set of veneers without even knowing it?! If done correctly, it’s extremely difficult to see the difference between a naturally perfect smile and a smile full of veneers. True professionals in the space take into account facial symmetry, skin tone, natural tooth color and many other seemingly outliers when deciding how to craft each patient’s unique set of veneers.

What Are Veneers?

So, now that you know you’ve seen veneers, you may be wondering what they really are. Veneers, often made of porcelain, are wafer-thin tooth-like shells that go on top of the existing tooth. They are made tooth by tooth and placed on one at a time. The natural tooth underneath is shaved down to a smaller size so the new veneer can be added without the appearance of any bulkiness. Because of this, veneers are a permanent smile addition and there’s essentially no going back after taking the leap into a new smile of veneers.

Veneers Are Not Just For Celebs

It would be hard to imagine a reason to regret them, as celebrities and the average-day American have access to the perfect smile of their dreams in ways they never had in the past thanks to dental advancements.

Why Veneers?

We’ve looked at what veneers are now, let’s look at why someone may want veneers and who would be a good candidate. Clients come to us for veneers for a number of reasons. Sometimes, cracks, fractures and broken teeth require a more advanced treatment option to not just fix the integrity of the tooth but also the appearance. Veneers also help with small gaps in teeth, discoloration, staining, and other aesthetic challenges.

The Process of Getting Them Goes a Little Like This:

First, we meet for a consultation to determine if you’re a good fit for veneers and whether or not veneers will help you reach your smile goals. If we decide moving forward is the best choice for you, we will schedule an appointment to prepare your teeth. During this procedure any cavities will be filled, teeth will be shaped and “roughed” to enable the adhesive to firmly grasp the natural tooth. Once your custom-made veneers are ready, it’s time to put them in place! We will check color, size, shape and fit before applying each tooth one-by-one filling your smile with beautifully white and natural looking teeth.

Recovering From Veneers:

Thankfully, veneers are a dental procedure that doesn’t need recovery time as it’s fairly easy and usually pain-free. Just take good care of them as you would your natural teeth and they will last a long, long time.

If you want to learn more about veneers or schedule a consultation with us to see if you’re a good candidate, we would be more than happy to talk with you and get something in the books.
